THE REAL LINCOLN: A NEW LOOK AT ABRAHAM LINCOLN, HIS AGENDA, AND AN UNNECESSARY WAR

By Thomas J. Dilorenzo. New York: Forum Books, 2003.

The Civil War was fought over much more than slavery and, in fact, not really over slavery at all.

For the American Civil War to have been about slavery, whites in the north, including old Abe himself, would have had to have believed in racial equality. Also, for the supposed cause to be the case, the Emancipation Proclamation would have had to not specifically exempt Union states that still had slavery and Confederate territory the Union currently occupied.

Dilorenzo quite ably demonstrates these points and a whole lot more about Lincoln's real purpose for fighting the war and, indeed, one could say, his reason for getting into politics in the first place

Anyone will love this book who appreciates a challenge to their view of history, respectful treatment of their questions about history and a well-written, well-documented and factual read.
