Well-written, cerebral, gripping.
Norman Davies takes the reader to several (though not all) of the lands of Europe which no longer exist. Some of them are part of living memory, some of them you might never have heard of and some you will only register as vaguely familiar. Davies recounts the history of all his selections in a way that will keep you turning the pages and purely looking forward to the next entry.
Be warned, though: the entry on Burgundy will literally drive you to drink.
