Woman Is ‘Livid’ After Returning from Weekend Away to Find Her Garden Furniture in Her Neighbor’s Yard: 'Borderline Theft'

A woman is furious after returning home to find her lawn furniture in her neighbor’s yard — and she’s wondering if she’s overreacting.

The woman detailed her story in the “Am I Being Unreasonable?” forum on the U.K.-based community site Mumsnet.com, where women can go to get advice about interpersonal dilemmas. In her post, the woman said that she recently went away for the weekend and returned Monday evening “to find our patio table, four chairs and parasol in [the] next door [neighbor’s] garden.”

“Turns out she’d had a BBQ on Sunday and ‘thought we wouldn’t mind’ if she borrowed them,’ “ the original poster (OP) added.

She continued, “No note. No text. Just helped herself. I wouldn’t even have known if I hadn’t looked over the fence."

The OP went on to say that not only was the furniture still in the other yard when she got home, but the neighbor's teenage son and his friends were “hanging out” on it.

“I’m honestly livid,” the OP said, adding, “It’s not a small thing to borrow, and she didn’t even ask. What if it had got damaged? Or gone missing?”

“AIBU [am I being unreasonable] to think this is beyond cheeky and actually borderline theft?” the woman asked at the end of her post.

Mumsnet users unanimously agreed that the OP had every right to feel angry at her neighbor.

“What on earth!!!!!!” said one person.

“That's shocking behavior on their behalf!” said someone else.

Another person said, “If they were just borrowing it, why was it still in their yard? It's not borderline, it's blatant theft. They took your stuff without asking and didn't return it.”

“If she 'was going' to return it, why hadn't she done that as a priority?” someone else said before adding, "This, to me, shows how she feels about your stuff: no consideration at all. YANBU [you are not being unreasonable]."
