Teacher Is Banned After Reportedly Drinking and Swearing in Front of Students During 'Out of Control' Lesson

A teacher has been banned from teaching after she allegedly drank, swore and danced the Macarena in front of her students.

 

Alice Ashton, who taught at Ysgol Bro Caereinion in Wales, was struck off following what was described as an "out of control" lesson in January 2024, according to The Telegraph and LBC.

 

Multiple students reported that Ashton smelled of alcohol, appeared under the influence of alcohol and used inappropriate language during the Jan. 17 lesson, according to the BBC.

 

Some students said the teacher seemed happy at the beginning of the lesson, but grew irritated as time passed, according to the reports.

 

One student said the teacher swore multiple times and called the class “little s----” before she “put her middle finger two to three inches” from another student’s face “and continued to swear at him."

 

Some students alleged they could smell the alcohol coming from a water bottle the woman was drinking. At one point, one student said, the teacher “asked the class to make the Macarena” while playing music loudly.

 

Ashton told another student who was walking around the classroom to leave, but told him “not to snitch,” The Telegraph reported.

 

The school commissioned an official complaint about a month after the in-class incident, and Ashton resigned the same day, according to the BBC.

 

At a hearing, it was said that Ashton was convicted of drunk driving in 2023, according to The Telegraph and the BBC. She was sentenced to a 12-month community order and 200 hours of unpaid work, and was disqualified from having a driver’s license for 28 months.

 

The Education Workforce Council (EWC) panel was told that Ashton has not apologized or shown remorse for the actions in January 2024.

 

Now, Ashton will be removed from the EWC register indefinitely, but can reapply in two years, according to the reports.

 

However, Ashton had previously informed the EWC via email that she was no longer teaching and moved to England, according to LBC.
