A smooth and refreshing read.
Signor Speranza, the mayor of the tiny Italian town of Prometto, needs to raise 70 thousand euros in sixty days or the town will effectively be shut down. He comes up with the idea to say a well-known Italian movie star is planning to shoot a movie there and needs locals to invest money in the project. When the fabulously wealthy town butcher puts up most of the money, Speranza continues with the charade which soon spirals way beyond his control.
For a long time, I had not read a humour novel that was truly funny. "Patron Saint" was and managed to be that way without resorting to much low-brow comedy or cruel mockery of others. The story flows really well and, even though it contains a certain amount of predictability, the reader won't mind this as said predictability serves as a means of anticipating the next hilarious event or plot twist.
