A Democratic Party booth was booted from a county fair in Ohio over “offensive,” politically-charged buttons, officials say.

The Ashland County Democratic Party booth was removed from the county fair on the afternoon of Thursday, Sept. 18, after fair officials “were made aware of offensive buttons” at the booth, fair officials said in a Facebook post.

“We are a family friendly fair and do not condone this from any vendor/merchant. We apologize for those who saw the display,” officials said, adding that the decision was “not political, we just can’t have this at our County Fair!”

The buttons seemed to be referring to President Donald Trump, news outlets report.

On one of the buttons was an image of a red baseball cap, emblazoned with the word “felon,” and in bold text below, asking “Is he dead yet?” WOIO reported. Another button with the same design but different text read “one day we will wake up to his obituary.”

The Ashland County Democratic Party said in a Facebook post that the buttons were, in hindsight, something “we should have thought about … more,” given the current political climate in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination

“We strongly oppose many of the policies of the Trump administration. We feel they are damaging the country. We express our ideas using our words and peaceful demonstrations,” the post said. “We do not and will never endorse political violence.”

Sheriff Kurt Schneider announced Friday, Sept. 19, that he has contacted the U.S. Secret Service so it can launch an investigation into the matter, Ashland Source reported. Schneider said his office is also conducting an investigation to determine if criminal charges should be brought.

“We will look at all of the information from a fact standpoint to determine what, if any, violations of Ohio criminal law have been committed and, if so, we will deal with it in the most appropriate manner,” he said, the outlet reported.

The Ashland County Democratic Party said it is being “silenced” by Republican officials, and called the incident “part of a dangerous pattern” of efforts by officials, locally and nationally, to abuse government authority to censor opposing views.

Ashland County is a roughly 90-mile drive northeast from Columbus.
