It seems that if this had been any normal military situation, David would have known what to do. However, when its your own son leading a rebellion against you, needless to say, things get a lot more complex.
Many of the verses in this passage read as though they are aimed at those involved in the attempted overthrow of the psalmist, while other verses consist of David talking directly to God.
It seems to me from verse 9 Absalom's attempted coup might have attracted people from all walks of life, with both the well-to-do and well-connected trying to get theirs, as well as the poor and lowly viewing this as their chance to raise their station.
