A whimsical session of bubble blowing turned potentially dangerous for two children when an 81-year-old neighbor got annoyed to the point of firing off shots of pepper spray, according to investigators in Florida.

It happened Friday, May 30, in the Ocala area, and ended with the woman under arrest, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The girls — ages 3 and 6 — were hit by the noxious spray, according to an affidavit.

Their mother reported the confrontation shortly after 9:30 p.m., noting “she and her two daughters were sprayed with bear mace,” the sheriff’s office said.

“She and her two daughters in the driveway on their property playing with soap bubble toys, when the defendant walked to the metal fence separating their properties and sprayed bear mace at them,” a deputy wrote in the affidavit.

“I was able to observe an orange/brown wet liquid substance on the fence and grass. ... The substance caused irritation to deputies’ nose and throat when smelled. ... I identified the liquid to be pepper spray.”

When questioned by deputies, the suspect “advised the victims were running up and down the fence and yelling at her, so she opened her porch screen door and sprayed the pepper spray at them,” the affidavit says.

Deputies arrested the woman and charged her with third-degree felony battery, the sheriff’s office said.
