MIRACLE IN THE ANDES: 72 DAYS ON THE MOUNTAIN AND MY LONG TREK HOME

By Nando Parrado with Vince Rause. New York: Crown Publishing, 2006.

An apt title if ever there was one!

This book tells the story, in the words of one of the survivors, of the plane crash that took place in the Andes Mountains in 1972, recounted in the book and film "Alive."

Previously, I had only ever heard about this incident in a speech given by a fellow student in public school, as well as seeing the brief parody of the above-mentioned film on an episode of "The Simpsons." After reading this book and getting the full, personal retelling, I am just stunned.

I mean, how can the author, as stated in the epilogue, at the time of writing anyway, not believe in the God of the Bible. This whole ordeal was truly a God thing. The fact anyone at all survived should convince you God is real.

Let's recap the factors that were against them, shall we: having no experience (that's made mention of anyway) with roughing it; next to nothing in the way of provisions, not even what was in the tail of the plane for most of their time on the mountain; wholly inadequate food, clothing, shelter, and warmth; experiencing an avalanche in addition to the crash which forced 19 men into the cockpit of the aircraft with no way in or out; trekking over a mountain with utterly no mountaineering experience while taking the worst route through an inhospitable environment while emaciated at a highly unsafe altitude: if that doesn't testify to Jesus Christ being real I just don't know what to say.
