THE WIDOW'S OFFERING

        Mark 12 41-44

You can't really buy a lot with two cents. If you were down to your last fifty dollars, you could buy a lawn mower or snow shovel and start trying to make money that way. Alternatively, you could buy the ingredients to bake cookies and sell them to earn money.

This widow woman's offering wasn't about giving so much as it was about humble selflessness. Like the Old Testament widow who made a cake for Elijah using the last of her food stuffs that wouldn't have seen her and her son until good times returned anyway, this widow woman didn't attempt to use her inadequate assets to try to save herself or even sustain herself for that little bit longer. Instead, she stepped out in faith and obedience, listening to the Lord's direction rather than her basic instincts.
