PSALM 109

            Psalm 109

First of all, note that the psalmist had tried turning the other cheek as Jesus would later instruct in the Sermon on the Mount. Note also the psalmist was giving himself unto prayer, not avenging himself. v4-5

Second, note that we don't know how old his children were. They could have been adults.

Third, note the object of this prayer was someone who was not just the personal enemy of the writer of this psalm but who mistreated the poor and needy, including (v17) the recently widowed and orphaned. The man being prayed against also loved cursing others.

Therefore, it would not be unloving to pray such harsh things against such a man out of love for all his victims and potential victims. If his children were indeed adults, it wouldn't be wrong to pray against them if they were taking after their father, and it wouldn't be wrong to pray that the memory of this wicked man's ancestors be blotted out, particularly if their son learned his ways from them but they were remembered and honoured as pillars of the community. It also wouldn't be wrong to pray for this man's financial ruin if all his gains were ill-gotten.
