Elderly Neighbor's 'Odd' Behavior Triggered Every Time Tenant Orders Food Delivery

A tenant is seeking advice on how to address their neighbor’s “odd” behavior.

In a Tuesday, Nov. 18 post on the Reddit forum r/neighborsfromhell, a user claimed that every time they order food or groceries to their front door, their “older neighbor” opens her door to look out and stare at the delivery person.

“The wild thing is when I’ve seen her through the peep hole of my door, she always looks mad/disappointed, just standing there looking down at what I ordered,” the original poster (OP) wrote.

The poster thinks the woman simply “doesn’t have anything better to do,” but one time, she publicly announced her disapproval, according to the tenant: “As I was approaching the door, I heard her complain to the delivery driver that it’s easy to just go downstairs to get the food. The delivery driver just looked at her [and] walked away.”

A more recent encounter occurred when the OP ordered some groceries to make dinner.

“Who, of course, was there standing in the doorway as I picked the groceries off of the ground?” they asked. “I smiled to be kind [and] she just gave this disappointed look. I’ve been laughing off [and] on for the past hour.”

It prompted the tenant to take to Reddit and ask other users what they would do.

“It’s comical now but I could see myself saying something [to] her soon as [my] annoyance may grow,” they said. “I’m the type to say exactly what is on my mind.”

In the comments, some users suggested they just ignore the neighbor.

“As long as she isn’t in your way, just grab your items, don’t make eye contact, don’t say a word and pretend like she’s invisible,” someone wrote. “After a while, she may (or may not) stop being nosey. Ignoring nosey people is the way to go.”

Others shared their own similar experiences.

“My older neighbor across the street always opens his garage door when I’m in the garage with the door open, always,” another user said. “Sometimes I see him staring from behind all the junk he’s got. He thinks I don’t see him.”

A few commenters suggested the tenant reaches out to the neighbor, invites them over or purchase something for here on his next delivery. But the poster had other thoughts.

“As I like to keep my privacy as much as possible with neighbors, I absolutely will not be inviting her over or providing anything to her,” the poster later added in an update. “The small level of passive aggressiveness is enough for me to ignore her.”

“The furthest I will go is saying, ‘May I help you?’ if she does it continually.”
