v1: By God, the text means the God of the Bible, not some genaric term.
God is David's god, a deity who is personal to David.
Under the new covenant, Christians should be in such close relationship with their God that their thoughts turn to Him upon or shortly after awakening.
David was fleeing for his life and was in a desert. Thus, he had a lot of physical needs, but David's priority was the fulfillment of his spiritual needs.
v2: David recognized you can meet with God in the desert just like you can in an assembly of God's people. God truly is everywhere. In fact, under the new covenant, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit live within Christians.
v3: The lovingkindness of the Lord is better than life because it lasts beyond our earthly life into eternity with Him.
v4: See what Paul says in Romans about the sufferings of this life not being worthy of comparison to eternity with Jesus.
v5-7: Life in the state David was in was extremely stressful; having to keep watch at night to insure he wouldn't be killed. However, David chose to stay focused on the delicious taste of life in the Lord, praising and rejoicing for all the times God had helped and delivered him in the past.
v8: John 15 1-5
v9-11: David knew the wicked people who were after him would be killed and be sent to Hell for eternity, but David held to all his Lord's promises, from the promise David would become king to, as best David understood it, his eternal salvation.
