Man in wheelchair on bus refuses to move for mother and young daughter

Standoff between mom and man in wheelchair results in Reddit post and over 2,500 comments

By Maureen Mackey

A Reddit writer has shared a stressful and upsetting situation involving commuter travel and her young daughter.

A woman who described herself as a 32-year-old female wrote on the platform that she and her five-year-old daughter boarded a commuter bus "at a busy stop."

The woman, who did not share her location, added that once they were on the bus, she saw that "there were no empty seats available, except for one [seat] near a person using a wheelchair" — a person whom she described as a 40-year-old male.

The mother went on, "I asked the person if [he] could move [his] wheelchair to another spot so that my daughter and I could sit together, but the person declined."

The man in the wheelchair, she went on, said he needed the space for his "mobility device."

The mother wrote, "I was taken aback and frustrated by this response."

She told the man that her daughter "was very young and needed to sit next to me for safety reasons" — yet still the person "refused to move."

The woman's friend told her that she was "being insensitive and ableist" for her request that a man in a wheelchair move a bit so that she and her young daughter could sit together on the bus.

The woman shared that she "ended up having to stand for the entire ride with my daughter in tow, which was uncomfortable and tiring for both of us."

The mother wrote that when she told a friend about the incident, her friend told her she was "being insensitive and ableist."

The woman's friend, the original Reddit poster continued, told her "that the person in the wheelchair had a right to the space" he needed — and "that it was unfair of me" to ask the man in the wheelchair to move a bit to accommodate her.

The mother continued, "Now, I'm questioning whether or not I was in the wrong for asking the person to move."

She asked the Reddit community about it — and for their thoughts on whether she was wrong "for asking a disabled person to move seats on the bus for my child."

To date, the woman's post has received 2,500 comments.

It's also been voted on nearly 4,000 times. (It has since been locked for further comments, according to Reddit.)

Wrote one commenter in a post on Reddit that many others "upvoted," "Imagine being so entitled that you genuinely think standing up on your perfectly good, working legs is so awful and tiring that you ask someone who is physically unable to stand to get out of your way."

Wrote another person in the same vein, "The 5-year-old could have just stood."

"Why couldn't he have moved a bit to help out a woman and her young child?"

This same commenter added, "Seriously, when did 5-year-olds become so fragile that they can't stand for a bus trip."

The person added, "Parenting like this damages children. They are being taught that they are pathetic."

In reply to that comment, another person wrote, "It's about safety. Children can easily fall in buses because they can't reach the places to hold onto, since those are made for adults."

Still another Reddit commenter wrote on Saturday morning, "I used to take the bus a lot. Mothers with kids are the most entitled bus users [that] exist."

"You were frustrated at the response because you’re so accustomed to getting your way."

Wrote yet another commenter who apparently was fed up with the mother who posted the original story, "One can only hope [that the original poster] comes to realize how lucky she is she can even stand and walk without any trouble at all, and that the next time there are no seats on the bus, she would just suck it up for a few minutes of the ride."

Said another person, "Your kid can sit on your lap or you can ask someone else to move."

Said still another person, "Just because you have a child doesn’t automatically give you priority over others. If the bus is too crowded, take a cab. Otherwise, you’re going to have to deal with the downside of public transportation."

Added this person, "You were frustrated at the response because you’re so accustomed to getting your way. I, too, have a child the same age. Plan better," this person added bluntly.

But a New York father of four and grandfather of two had a very different take.

He told Fox News Digital his opinion of the post related to travel etiquette: "The man in the wheelchair already had a seat. Why couldn't he have moved a bit to help out a woman and her young child?"

He added, "This doesn't make sense to me."

7 Most Common Home Defense Mistakes

Feb 22, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

Defending your home and family from an invader can be overwhelming and stressful for anyone. In the heat of the moment, costly mistakes are often made, leaving you open to physical or legal harm. Avoiding such mistakes can help you keep yourself and your family safe in even the most intense emergency scenarios.

The Babylon Bee consulted with firearms experts and ChatGPT to compile some of the most common mistakes that are made in home defense situations:

list of 7 items

1. Failing to put up a gun-free zone sign: Peer-reviewed studies show that 1,200% of armed robberies could be prevented if everyone put up one of these signs!

2. Thinking your 14-year-old yorkie Sargeant Pickles will protect you: He's blind in one eye and riddled with arthritis, for crying out loud!

3. Letting the criminal bend your shotgun barrel and point it at your face: This is even worse than letting the robber render your gun useless by sticking his finger in the barrel.

4. Failing to ask the intruder's pronouns before firing: The last thing you want to do is misgender the perp when you call the police.

5. Using crane style when everyone knows tiger style is better for close quarters: Choosing the wrong fighting style can really put you at a disadvantage.

6. Not having a 30-round fully-semi-automatic folding magazine clip: Those things are deadly! Just ask the experts on CNN!

7. Asking the robber to wait while you go open your gun safe, take off the trigger lock, go get your ammo that's stored in a different location, load, and aim: Extensive studies show home intruders are unwilling to accommodate this request.

PENNSYLVANIA CHICK-FIL-A BANS UNACCOMPANIED MINORS AFTER ROWDY TEENS CAUSE CHAOS

Pennsylvania Chick-fil-A creates new rule after rowdy teens cause chaos: 'We're a family-friendly restaurant'

By Kristine Parks

A Chick-fil-A restaurant in Pennsylvania warned that unaccompanied minors were no longer allowed to dine in their establishment after unruly "children and teenagers" continued to cause disruptions.

A Royersford, Pennsylvania Chick-fil-A shared the new policy was prompted by rowdy minors disrespecting employees and vandalizing their establishment after being dropped off by parents on the weekend.

"While we love being a community restaurant and serving guests of all ages, some issues need to be addressed," the FaceBook post explained before giving specific "unacceptable behaviors" employees had to deal with.

Some children and teens engaged in loud conversations with "a lot of explicit language," cursed at and mocked staff, vandalized property, stole decor, and walked through the drive thru lanes, the post claimed.

"We are a family friendly restaurant where this is not tolerated," the Chick-fil-A branch warned.

"As you can imagine, this is not a pleasant experience," the post went on. "We want to provide a comfortable and safe environment for our guests and our staff, and also to protect our building. Therefore, we cannot allow this to continue. As a result, to dine in our restaurant, anyone under the age of 16 is required to be accompanied by an adult," the restaurant explained.

Unaccompanied minors could still purchase food, the branch said, but had to take it to go.

The store went on to apologize to well-behaved teens who were being affected by this rule and said they were not blaming parents for their kids' behavior but could no longer tolerate it in their establishment.

"Parents, we are not blaming you. Children and teens are learning to navigate the world free from supervision and often push the boundaries. We simply can’t let them push those boundaries anymore at our restaurant. We encourage you to talk to your children and ask about behaviors they have seen and perhaps participated in," it went on.

The post was shared on Twitter by user Megan Brock.

She commented on the post, "Your know a culture is in serious decline when a local Chick-Fil-A has to beg parents to require their children to act in a way that is compatible with the basic decency required in a functioning society. This reads like a homily on the fall of Western civilization."

Fox News Digital reached out to Chick-fil-A corporate for comment on the store's post and policy but did not hear back by time of publication.

MASONIC SECRETS FROM THEIR BOOKS

It isn't just a social club, a fraternity or a service club. Freemasonry is an antichrist organization that tells its members the lie told to Eve in the Garden. Further, it eventually gets those who are willing to do so to worship the one who deceived Eve in the first place.

I'd heard various things about freemasonry over the years, but this video just lays it right out. I wish I'd had this to watch when I was a much younger Christian.

SEYMOUR HERSH ON DEMOCRACY NOW: HOW AMERICA TOOK OUT THE NORD STREAM PIPELINE

"Democracy Now" is one of the few left-wing media outlets I can stand because they often discuss topics that truly need to be talked about. This video contains a lot of interesting information.

THE HISTORY OF SPEECH SYNTHESIS

Without synthesysed speech, I wouldn't be able to use a computer or to have read a lot of the books I have.

This video presents a history of this technology. I saw it years ago via another blog run by a couple blind people I knew from school. I recognized this history was important so I downloaded the video and saved it in my archives.

I hope you enjoy it, too.

REACTION TO ROALD DAHL CENSORSHIP

You've probably heard the news about the changes to classic Roald Dahl children's books to make them less offensive, and, if you haven't, here's an article.

I'm tempted to go along with the folks in the story on this, and some of the changes do seem ridiculous (wouldn't being enormous and enormously fat amount to the same thing?), but part of me thinks this is just a Jewish ploy to boost sales of the older copies of Dahl's work.

3 CLEAR REASONS WHY OVERPOPULATION IS A MYTH

When I was a kid I bought into the population explosion propaganda they indoctrinated us with in school. After I left those institutions, I realized what a crock it all was and this article gives a good summary of why we don't have to worry about human fertility.

By JEN SMITH, CHIEF REPORTER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM

PUBLISHED: 08:10 EST, 16 February 2023 | UPDATED: 13:11 EST, 16 February 2023

Doctors from the St. Louis gender clinic - now under investigation following bombshell whistleblower claims - advised teachers to 'affirm' an entire group of fifth graders, emails have revealed.

The Washington University Transgender Center at the St. Louis Children's Hospital was shamed last week by whistleblower Jamie Reed, a former employee who wrote a bombshell article for The Free Press describing the 'medically and morally appalling' scenario at play.

Her claims sparked two investigations - one by the Missouri AG's office, and another by the office of Senator Josh Howley.

Now, DailyMail.com can reveal the clinic's emails to a concerned elementary school teacher from Parkway Schools, a district on the outskirts of St. Louis.

The teacher contacted doctors in October 2021 seeking help when a group of fifth graders - girls aged 10 or 11 - claimed they were all transgender.

In October 2021, a concerned elementary school teacher approached the clinic asking its doctors for guidance on how to handle a group of fifth grade kids who all claimed they were trans after one of their classmates 'came out'

A staff member from the clinic replied, telling the teacher that studies which suggest social contagion are 'invalid', and that they would recommend 'as much support and discussion as possible around their gender exploration'

'I wondered if I can ask you a quick question about a situation we're experiencing at one of our elementary schools,' the teacher wrote.

'The short story is that one of the students in the 5th-grade class is coming out as Trans.

'She has told several of her friends and now several of them are also saying they are Trans.

Dr. Sarah Garwood advised: 'The best we can do is affirm, validate and allow for exploration.'

'We do not want to discourage them if this is the case, but we're also suspecting there could be other reasons they are doing this than that this is actually the case

'Is this common? Are there resources for handling this type of situation? Again, we do not want to discourage kids if this is actually the case, but we also do not want to diminish the actual experience of trans folks.'

In response, a doctor said: 'There are schools of thought that have documented this as an issue of significance, in that a student coming out as transgender, becomes a "contagion".

'This language isn't affirming and the few studies on phenomenon are, in my personal and professional opinion, invalid.'

The doctor then suggested that all of the girls were genuinely transgender, and that it simply took their friend to realize it for them to as well.

'The other end of the spectrum is that this is normal in that when one person realizes who they are and shares it, others realize they are similar.

'I believe there is a middle ground where we allow for some nuance. For younger folks and some adults too, it is easy to latch on to a new concept or idea and make it yours.'

The doctor then compared it to 'fad diets, workout types and marketing plans and even ADHD,' and appeared to admit that it was not always genuine.

'I have seen this happen with mental health diagnoses as well ("You have ADHD? Me too!")

The teacher replied, thanking the doctor for their advice, and asking for 'additional resources

The same staff member from the clinic replied, telling the teacher: 'The best we can do is affirm, validate and allow for exploration'

The St Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri, where the clinic is run. It is now under investigation

'However, it may still be a valid experience, and for some, it may be genuine exploration of gender.

'I will try to find some resources for you, after filtering through resources that may invalidate transgender folks.

'In general, I'd recommend as much support and discussion as possible around their gender exploration.'

In a follow-up email, the doctor quoted Dr. Sarah Garwood, saying: 'The best we can do is affirm, validate and allow for exploration.'

Whistleblower Jamie Reed spent four years working at the clinic. In a bombshell article for The Free Press last week, she said what is being done to kids is 'morally and medically appalling'

She also said 'no harm' would be done affirming a child who decided they were not trans.

'If in a few weeks or months, a student wants to go by their legal name and pronouns that match their sex assigned at birth, no harm was really done in affirming them before.'

Neither the teacher nor the doctor who advised them can be identified.

The emails were released as the result of a Freedom of Information request filed by Parents Defending Education.

Nicki Neily, the president and founder of the group, told DailyMail.com: 'The utter lack of curiosity about the underlying causes of such a trend among ten-year-old children by medical professionals is immoral at best and an abdication of professional responsibility at worst.

'These children and their families have been let down, both by the school and the hospital - so it's little wonder that trust in these institutions have declined precipitously over the past few years.'

The clinic is now under investigation from the Missouri Attorney General's Office, and Senator Josh Howley's office.

None of its staff members have commented on the controversy.

Jamie Reed worked at The Washington University Transgender Center at St. Louis Children's Hospital and was responsible for patient intake between 2018 and November 2022.

In her article for The Free Press, she says she took the job with the intention of 'saving' trans kids, but that she believes what is happening amounts to 'permanent harm' on young, vulnerable children.

'The doctors I worked alongside at the Transgender Center said frequently about the treatment of our patients: “We are building the plane while we are flying it.”

'No one should be a passenger on that kind of aircraft,' she wrote.
