DOWNTOWN MONTH 2026 CELEBRATES THE PLACES THAT BRING CANADIANS TOGETHER

IDA Canada encourages Canadians to embrace their downtowns this August

 

(OTTAWA, ON) - August 4, 2026 – This August, IDA Canada is inviting Canadians to rediscover and embrace the downtowns and mainstreets that bring communities to life.

 

As Canadians navigate economic uncertainty, rising costs and growing pressure on local businesses, Downtown Month 2026 is a reminder of the important role downtowns play in everyday life. This year’s theme, Embrace Downtowns, encourages Canadians to support the places that bring people together - whether that means shopping locally, visiting a neighbourhood café, attending a community event or simply spending time downtown.

 

Across Canada, downtowns remain central to local economies and community life. They are where small businesses open their doors each morning, where neighbours connect, where culture is experienced firsthand and where communities gather during moments of celebration and challenge alike.

 

“Downtowns and mainstreets are at the heart of community life here in Canada,” said Paul McKinnon, Chair of IDA Canada. “At a time when many Canadians are being more thoughtful about where they spend their time and money, Downtown Month is an opportunity to recognize the value of supporting the local businesses, workers and public spaces that help their communities thrive.”

 

Downtowns and main streets continue to face real challenges, from economic pressures to changing consumer habits and ongoing social issues impacting communities across the country. At the same time, they remain places of resilience, entrepreneurship and local pride.

 

IDA Canada says continued collaboration between governments, downtown organizations and community leaders will be essential to ensuring downtowns remain welcoming, economically strong and positioned for the future.

 

“Choosing to spend time downtown has a real impact,” added McKinnon. “Supporting local businesses, attending local events and investing in community spaces all contribute to the long-term vitality of Canadian communities.”

 

Throughout August, IDA Canada is encouraging its members to promote the importance of downtowns by sharing key messages and engaging their communities around this year’s theme: Embrace Downtowns.
