McDonald’s is diving into an “otherworldly” innovation.
On Wednesday, the brand announced that they are testing out a drink-focused concept called CosMc’s, which is a cafe-like outpost that will feature a menu of both familiar items and totally new options for customers.
The menu will include speciality teas, cold coffee and blended beverages. Some standouts include the sour cherry energy slush, tropical spiceade and s’mores cold brew. Unlike any classic McDonald’s restaurants, CosMc’s will offer add-ons to drinks like popping boba, flavor syrups, energy and vitamin C shots.
Along with unique flavor combinations, CosMc’s will offer familiar food offerings, including egg McMuffin sandwiches and M&M's McFlurries. More exciting food choices include the spicy queso sandwich, McPops (which are like filled donut holes) and pretzel bites.
CosMc’s digital, drive thru experience will use cashless payment devices that will prompt customers to drive thru pickup windows when their orders are ready.
The limited test of the shops will start in Bolingbrook, Illinois, this month, as it will be the first CosMc’s location. More locations will open pilot joints across Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio metropolitan areas by the close of 2024, per a release.
While diving into something new, McDonald’s is also tapping into the past. This month, the fast food chain announced they’re bringing back McNugget Buddies, the nostalgic Happy Meal collectibles, after more than 25 years off the market.
Starting on Dec. 11, six different McNugget Buddy collectibles, each with different outfits and backstories, will be available at McDonald’s nationwide. The toys’ reprisal comes in partnership with New York City-based artist Kerwin Frost, who helped redesign the mascots and created a meal for fans to order.
The new Buddies are inspired by Frost’s childhood in Harlem and one of the toys is a miniature version of the DJ, aptly named Kerwin Frost and adorned with a matching face tattoo. The other McNugget Buddies are Don Bernice, Uptown Moe, Waffutu, BRRRICK and Darla. Each toy is decked out in interchangeable outfits.
The Kerwin Frost Box includes one McNugget Buddy, fries, a soft drink and your choice of 10-piece McNuggets or a Big Mac. Plus, merch from the partnership will be available online starting on Dec. 11, while supplies last.
After the famous McRib — consisting of boneless pork slathered in barbecue sauce and topped with slivered onions and dill pickles on a hoagie-style bun — went on a “McRib Farewell Tour” last October, the fast food spot decided to bring the beloved menu item back at select locations for a limited time only this month.
And in October, McDonald’s reintroduced Boo Buckets for Halloween.
The Halloween-themed pails, which can later be used for trick-or-treating, made their official return in the middle of October. The festive buckets, first introduced in 1986, returned in 2022 for the first time since 2016.
