Woke Gender Madness Grips a California University

Among the issues that helped to sink Kamala Harris was the perception among a great many Americans that the Democrats have completely thrown in with the transgender crowd. They insist that athletes who are male must be allowed to compete in sports against women, so long as they “identify” as women. Lots of people think that’s ridiculous.

In today’s Martin Center article, Professor Elizabeth Weiss looks at how this has played out at her institution, San José State.

She writes:

The San José State University (SJSU) women’s volleyball team made international news this season, with coverage by the BBC, the Telegraph, Quillette, the New York Times, CNN, and ESPN. The reason for all this interest is that SJSU had a biological male on the team.

This offense against athletic fairness was not received kindly by many involved. Brooke Slusser (a team co-captain), assistant coach Melissa Batie-Smoose, two former players, and eight players from teams that forfeited games against SJSU have all filed suit. Teams from Boise State University, Southern Utah University, Utah State University, the University of Wyoming, and the University of Nevada all opted not to play SJSU due to the Spartans’ unfair advantage.

Not just an unfair advantage — female players have been badly injured in games where they have to face biological males. But when an assistant coach for SJSU complained about this, she was punished. Woke ideologues don’t tolerate dissent.

Weiss points to other examples where universities disrespect women (actual women) in favor of “progressive” ideology. For instance, “Universities also celebrate World Hijab Day, which is held on the first day of February to coincide with the return of Ayatollah Khomeini to Iran from exile. Campuses around the U.S. have been remarkably silent when violence occurs to women who regard the hijab as a repressive tool meant to erase their individual identities. Note, for example, Wear-A-Hijab Day at the University of Illinois.”
