By James Carl Nelson. New York: William Morrow, 2019.
A thorough retelling of a forgotten war.
Prior to hearing about this book, I had no idea that, in the waning months of World War I an for seven months thereafter, a small group of American soldiers fought in Russia, officially aiding the White Russians against the Bolsheviks, along with other allied nations Britain, France and Canada. Nelson provides a great recounting of this conflict, making the folly, incompetence, absolute hardship, pluck, and heroism thereof absolutely clear.
