by Dyan Sheldon. Cambridge, MA: Candlewick Press, 1999.
This book is too over the top.
Mary Elizabeth "Lola" Cep is a born actress. Her mother has moved the family from New York to Dellwood, New Jersey, a change Lola is not impressed with. She deals with competition from the "it" girl at school, attending her favourite band's farewell concert and having the lead role in the school's production of "Pygmalion."
At times, this book is just too much. For one thing, in real life the whole high school wouldn't revolve around rich girl Carla Santini. For another, the author makes one of the book's main themes painfully obvious from the beginning, then spells it out near the end. Lola's theatrics also get truly hard to take at times.
