Police in New York have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the killing of his ex-girlfriend earlier this week.
Nathaly Ramirez, 23, was pushed from a 15th-floor balcony at her Bronx, N.Y. apartment building early in the morning on Tuesday, Oct. 6. She was found holding her 8-month-old daughter who police say survived because Ramirez likely spent the last moments of her life saving her.
On Wednesday, Angel Carrasco was arrested in the Bronx, the New York Police Department confirms to PEOPLE.
Investigators at the scene found flowers inside Ramirez’s residence and believe Carrasco may have brought them to her in a bid to reconcile amid what appears to have been a volatile relationship with past accounts of alleged domestic violence, ABC7 NY reported.
An NYPD spokesperson was unable to confirm this information when contacted by PEOPLE.
A witness told NBC that she heard someone scream, “Please don’t do this. My baby. You know my baby is scared. Look at her face.” The neighbor said she then heard another scream and “something hit the ground,’” per the outlet.
Ramirez and her infant were found on the ground outside the building a little after 3:30 a.m.
Carrasco was allegedly seen in surveillance video leaving the building after the killing, police said, per ABC7 NY.
He was arrested after police received a live tip about his location, an NYPD spokesperson tells PEOPLE, adding that he was with an acquaintance. It is unclear whether that person was involved and it remains under investigation.
The spokesperson disputed the claim that Carrasco’s brother tipped them off about his location.
According to a police account cited by ABC7 NY, Carrasco had previously been charged in January on allegations of slapping Ramirez and breaking into her apartment.
NYPD did not respond to PEOPLE’s requests for confirmation and online court records did not show a docket for Carrasco as of Thursday afternoon.
Ramirez had been a tenant for a few months and was a devoted mother, according to neighbors and friends.
“Nathaly Ramirez was a gem to work with,” Lishawn Alexander said, per ABC7 NY. “She was a very radiant person. She was very hardworking, showed tenacity and dedication to pursue her career goals.”
Another friend told the outlet she “was very happy, like she was very happy to be a mom. She’s a new mom and the baby was very happy.”
At a memorial set up outside the building Wednesday, those who knew Ramirez praised the Bronx Leadership Academy alum for her energy.
“I don’t remember a day that she was mad, sad. If we were sad, she would lift us up,” Dominique Rosado told ABC7 NY. She played volleyball, basketball, everything. So that’s what we know her for: being athletic, being happy, lifting everybody up.”
Ramirez’s infant was taken to the hospital in critical condition but was stable as of Thursday, the NYPD tells PEOPLE. Carrasco has been charged with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, attempted manslaughter and assault.
His online court records were not immediately available and it wasn’t clear if he has retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.
