Man Goes on Honeymoon Without Wife After Her Sister Goes into Labor During Wedding: 'Was I Supposed to Sit at Home?'

A man is sparking conversation online after admitting that he took his honeymoon solo after his wife's sister went into labor during their wedding and she stayed home to provide support.

In a post shared to Reddit, the anonymous man writes that his wife, Tonya, "basically raised her sister, Marie, after their mom passed away."

"Even after their dad remarried, Tonya and her sister were more mom/daughter than sisters," he adds.

Marie got married last year and quickly became pregnant — only to go into premature labor at Tonya and the Reddit poster's wedding reception.

"[Marie] gave birth to a tiny but healthy baby girl," the man writes, adding: "And for some reason, Tonya decided that she needed to go take care of her."

Explaining that the couple "had nonrefundable tickets," the man writes: "insurance didn't cover 'I have to stay and take care of my sister' as part of the coverage."

"Plus I had booked two weeks off for my wedding and honeymoon," he adds.

So, the man opted to go on the trip himself — and seemingly had few regrets.

"I got a massive bed all to myself," he writes. "I used all the resort credits that were for couples massages, romantic excursions and special meals on deep sea fishing and a dune buggy tour of the island."

Now back from the trip, the man writes that his wife is "still with her sister" but "upset that I went on our honeymoon by myself." The baby, meanwhile, is "still in the NICU," he writes.

"Was I supposed to let the money go to waste? Was I supposed to sit at home playing Diablo while I waited for her to be done?" he writes.

While the man writes that his "friends all agree that I would have been dumb to waste the money and my time off," he says his wife's friends disagree.

Commenters, meanwhile, appear to side with the poster, with many agreeing that the man should have taken the trip.

"Would have been a massive waste to not take the Honeymoon," writes one commenter. "It is your wife's loss that she didn't go, There were plenty of people to look after her sister. Remind your wife that she could have gone on the Honeymoon, she chose not to!"

The commenter added that the situation "does not bode well for your married life, she was willing to abandon you and leave you alone after your wedding."

Another wrote: "It is not rational or healthy a sister is a mother to her other sister.  This is serious codependency issues that the husband is going to have to navigate their entire marriage.  He will always be second fiddle."
