By Kliph Nesteroff. New York: Grove Press, 2015.
One of the best reads you'll have had in a while.
The author traces the history of American comedy from the nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth. Both stand up and situational comedians are discussed and the reader learns details about household names as well as about funny people of whom they weren't previously aware.
With any book like this, of course, there are people and threads that could have been included but weren't, but this does not take away from the enjoyment and worthwhile nature of the book.
The only thing I would say against this tome is the author has a tendency to run down his subjects, except Bob Newhart, a man about whom literally no one has anything bad to say. Still a great work, though.
