This is a case of the book and the movie each being good in their own way.
The Nick Hornby novel is more of a parallel of Will and Marcus' stories, whereas the film sticks to the intersection of those stories.
The parts in the book involving Mark and Ellie, a plot point that is far more developed in that medium, make for a good read.
Though the movie suffers from too much narration, it remains good nonetheless, making for a good adaptation of most of the novel. I don't remember the part involving the school concert from the book, but it makes for a good climax for the movie.
