Ecclesiastes 1 1-11
v7: A summary of the water cycle.
v8: Much of our popular culture, and our culture and society in general, operates on the premise that whichever particular thing is in view is the greatest whatever of its kind and always will be, thus driving man to partake.
For example, a movie is promoted almost as if no one had ever before come up with a work of such cinematic brilliance so you'd be crazy not to rush out to the theatre, wait in line for hours and be among the first to see the film when it opens.
However, a few weeks later, another such movie (so-called) comes out and the promotional frenzy takes place anew.
Of course, hard-sell advertising is particularly adept at adhering to the principle under discussion in this verse. The sale on at a store is sold as if it's the last one the store is ever going to have and as though no other store has ever had deals as good as this retailer in the history of commerce. Such is always the case, until next week's sale, that is.
The sad part of all of this is so many people fall for this stuff most, or even every single time.
v10: This verse is particularly poignant if you're into studying alternative history and ancient technology.
v11: Man, it's almost as if people today had this verse stenciled on the ceiling above their beds and took it on as their life motto.
