NEW STUDY FINDS ENTIRE SPOONFUL OF MICROPLASTICS IN PEOPLE'S BRAINS

New study finds entire spoonful of microplastics in people’s brains — and 3 times as much in those with dementia

Your brain is 99.5% brain tissue — but the rest? Plastic.

 

That’s the unsettling takeaway from a new study co-lead by Matthew Campen, who found microplastics in human brains at far higher levels than other organs. Even more troubling, these tiny particles are accumulating rapidly, having increased 50% over the past eight years.

 

“There’s much more plastic in our brains than I ever would have imagined or been comfortable with,” said Campen, distinguished professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

 

On average, the brain samples studied contained about 7 grams of microplastics — roughly the weight of an average plastic spoon.

 

To make matters worse, the study also found up to 10 times the amount of microplastics in the brains of 12 dementia patients compared to healthy brains. While the correlation is clear, researchers cautioned that further study is needed to establish a direct link.

 

The research team analyzed 52 brain samples — 28 from autopsies conducted in 2016 and 24 from 2024. While microplastics were present in every single sample, the concentrations were notably higher in the more recent specimens.

 

Additional brain samples dating back to 1997 followed the same alarming pattern, with higher microplastic levels found in newer samples.

 

Campen said the increase mirrors the global surge in plastic waste. Global plastic production has more than doubled over the past two decades, now totaling about 400 million tons annually.

 

Scientists previously found that humans consume 5 grams of microplastics each week, which is about the weight of a credit card. Microplastics have been detected in various parts of the body, including the lungs, liver, kidneys, placenta, blood, semen and even breast milk.

 

The most common microplastic that researchers from the University of New Mexico detected was polyethylene, widely used in packaging materials like bottles and cups. What’s more, many of these particles were smaller than previously thought — some are no bigger than viruses.

 

Campen said these tiny fragments are small enough to cross the blood-brain barrier, though he noted that the exact process of how they are transported to the brain remains unclear. He suspects that a primary route of entry is through our food, particularly meat.

 

“The way we irrigate fields with plastic-contaminated water, we postulate that the plastics build up there,” Campen said. “We feed those crops to our livestock. We take the manure and put it back on the field, so there may be a sort of feed-forward biomagnification.”

 

Other studies suggest another potential route for microplastics to enter the human body: through the nose. The olfactory bulb might allow these tiny particles to travel directly to the brain when we breathe.

 

Despite a global push to reduce plastic production, researchers warn that the microplastic threat isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Plastic takes decades to break down into microscopic particles, meaning the environmental contamination will continue to grow for years to come.

 

While the full health impact of microplastics remains uncertain, studies suggest they can damage cells, trigger inflammation, disrupt organ function and alter immune responses. Exposure to these tiny particles has also been linked to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke as well as some cancers.

 

Though microplastics may be nearly impossible to avoid entirely, there are steps you can take to limit your exposure.

 

Start by cutting out single-use plastics — think food and beverage packaging, as well as takeout containers. Swap plastic storage containers for glass or metal, and never reheat food in plastic containers in the microwave.

 

Experts also recommend filtering your tap water, investing in high-quality air filters for your home and cleaning your living space more frequently.

 

Another simple but effective tip: cut back on processed foods, which tend to have higher levels of these tiny particles.

Trump vows to end Biden’s ‘ridiculous’ paper straw initiative: ‘Back to plastic’

WASHINGTON — President Trump announced Friday that he will soon sign an executive order ending the Biden administration’s initiative to ban plastic straws across the federal government.

 

“I will be signing an Executive Order next week ending the ridiculous Biden push for Paper Straws, which don’t work,” the president, 78, wrote on Truth Social.

 

“BACK TO PLASTIC!”

 

Trump appeared to be referring to former President Joe Biden’s July 2024 promise to “phase out” single-use plastics — including straws, cutlery and cups — in federal departments.

 

The ban would have also covered all packaging and food service operations, with the end of procurement due in 2027.

 

“Plastic production and waste have doubled over the past two decades, littering our ocean, poisoning the air of communities near production facilities, and threatening public health,” a contemporary White House fact sheet stated.

 

Environmentalists have long railed against single-use plastics as wasteful and dangerous to sea turtles and other ocean wildlife.

 

Trump expressed his annoyance at the push back in 2020, during his failed re-election bid.

 

“They want to ban straws. Has anyone tried those paper straws? They’re not working too good,” he said during one event. “It disintegrates as you drink it.”

 

Trump’s announcement was praised by Republicans and conservatives like Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), who wrote on X: “If radical environmentalists want to ‘end all plastic,’ they should quit using it.”

 

“It may be facile junior high election stuff but acting (or even just posting) on a steady stream of annoying, relatable issues in your daily life is pretty good low calorie politics,” wrote government relations strategist Liam Donovan.

 

“I guess what I’m saying is make incandescent light bulbs great again,” he added.

 

“The United States contributes a minuscule share of the plastic waste in the oceans,” added UnHerd US editor Sohrab Ahmari. “Enough with making life miserable for ordinary people in the name of these boutique causes.”

Paper straws contain toxic ‘forever chemicals’ — could be worse than plastic: study

It could be the straw that broke the eco-worrier’s back.

 

Paper straws might not be the “eco-friendly” drinking tube they’ve been promoted to be: Belgian researchers found that these so-called “green” utensils are toxic and therefore potentially worse for the environment than their much-vilified plastic counterparts, according to a new study published in the journal Food Additives & Contaminants.

 

“Straws made from plant-based materials, such as paper and bamboo, are often advertised as being more sustainable and eco-friendly than those made from plastic,” Thimo Groffen, Ph.D., study author and an environmental scientist at the University of Antwerp, said in a statement. “However, the presence of PFAS [poly- and perfluoroalkyl-based substances known as “forever chemicals” because they last for a long time before breaking down] in these straws means that’s not necessarily true.”

 

The new research comes following multiple initiatives enforced by numerous US cities, including New York, and restaurant chains to ban disposable plastic suckers comprised of polypropylene and polystyrene, which take hundreds of years to decompose and are linked to health problems from liver problems to birth defects.

 

“Their time has come and gone. I believe we should get rid of plastic straws,” NYC Mayor de Blasio said in 2018 after the City Council introduced a proposal to prohibit restaurants and bars from distributing plastic sippers.

 

Meanwhile, countries such as Belgium and the UK have already ditched these implements in favor of the supposed eco-conscious plant-based alternatives.

 

However, according to the new research paper, this is a total “strawman argument” — as these alleged environment-saving slushie siphons are potentially packed with more PFAS than the “evil” plastic version.

 

To deduce this a-straw-calyptic theory, researchers analyzed the PFA concentrations of 39 brands of drinking straws, which were comprised of five materials: paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel, and plastic.

 

They found that paper straws were the most PFA-filled with a whopping 90% of paper straws containing the chemicals.

 

Meanwhile, bamboo straws — another highly touted green alternative — clocked in second with 80%, followed by 75% of plastic straws, 40% of glass straws, and none in steel straws.

 

By far the most prevalent PFA was perfluorooctanoic acid, which has been been banned globally since 2020. However, this substance is still manufactured in some countries and could be present in products bought by US consumers.

 

Also present were trifluoroacetic acid and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, PFAS which easily dissolve in water, meaning they could potentially leach out of straws into beverages.

 

“The presence of PFAS in paper and bamboo straws shows they are not necessarily biodegradable,” warned Groffen.

 

Not to mention that some of these so-called “100% recyclable” straws are actually anything but.

 

It’s unclear how these substances — which have been used since the 1940s to repel water and grease in everything from cookware to carpets — ended up in the straws, although the presence of them in every brand suggests they were added on purpose as a liquid repellant.

 

Other potential PFA sources could be the soil the plant-based materials were grown in as well as the water used in their manufacturing, per Phys.org.

 

Fortunately, low concentrations of PFAS, such as the amounts ingested from using straws, are unlikely to pose serious health risks.

 

However, animal studies suggest that an accumulation of these chemicals over time could cause a range of appalling side effects, including liver damage, a weakened immune system, underweight babies and even infant death.

 

Unfortunately, the long-term effects on humans are not yet known as the animal tests were conducted with higher levels of PFAs.

 

In light of the findings, Goffen deduced that plant-based straws are perhaps an environmental “paper tiger” and that there is perhaps only one true eco-friendly alternative to plastic.

 

“We did not detect any PFAS in stainless-steel straws, so I would advise consumers to use this type of straw — or just avoid using straws at all,” the researcher advised.

This mobile living space resembles a space station with its inflatable dome, which can inflate to triple its size. The brains behind this futuristic pad is an architectural firm called 2001, and it was developed for Esch-Alzette in Luxembourg, which is the country's second-largest city.

 

Now, I'm not talking about just another cramped mobile tiny home here. This thing can not only grow in size but is transportable, and it's even eco-friendly. Let's dive in and see how this space-age dwelling actually works.

 

A mobile tiny house with a twist

 

At its core, E22SS PIU! is a 6-person mobile tiny house that can be easily transported to various locations. In its compact form, it resembles a stainless steel trailer, containing essential amenities such as a bathroom, kitchen and dining space. However, the real magic happens when it reaches its destination.

 

Unfolding and inflating

 

Once parked, the E22SS PIU! undergoes a remarkable transformation. Two wings unfold from the trailer, creating a circular platform with a 29.53-foot diameter. This platform is then covered with cork, providing a stable and eco-friendly base. The final step in this metamorphosis is the inflation of a double-shell pneumatic dome on top of the platform.

While the E22SS PIU! may not be a practical solution for everyday tiny living, it serves a greater purpose. Created as part of Esch's Capital of Culture program, this project is designed to explore various contexts and environments within the city of Esch. It challenges our perceptions of resource usage in architecture and society, stimulating discussions about innovative housing solutions.

For one thing, a dehumidifier isn't going to do you a bit of good if you have a basement or crawlspace with a dirt floor.


Rather than using expensive Swedish cloths to replace surviettes, just use wet dishcloths or facecloths.


Instead of getting rid of your lawn, just do next to nothing with it, other than cutting the grass. You can't not mow your lawn or you'll get ticks and other nasty things.


As for the article about good fire, people where I live still do this. Also, many people on the right and the alternative side of things have been recommending getting back to something like this for years. In fact, even Donald Trump sent out a Tweet when he was president. However, because they were white, nobody listened to them.


As for the section on pee leaks, again, most women in Canada can't just go into a store at the mall and replace a pair of pants and underwear they've just unexpectedly urinated in. Also, they can't afford a single pair of pee-proof leggings that are over a hundred bucks a pop.


How many of these problems in women go back to potty training or the immediate post-toilet training years?


Also, the section failed to mention that apparently you shouldn't "just in case" pee, like before you run out to the Kwik-E-Mart. Maybe that was good advice when you were five, but it isn't now. It just weakens the bladder.
