PSALM 137

Though the verse about dashing the Edomite's children's heads against a stone may sound disturbing to many, there is one very important thing we have to keep in mind.

Everyone is going to have their heads dashed against a stone. They will either be dashed against the living stone of Jesus Christ in repentance, or they will be dashed against a stone in a more literal sense, so to speak, and perish, spending eternity in Hell.

Look in your Bible at the Book of Acts, chapter 2, verse 38 and decide which one your path in life will be.

MEDIA-RELATED STUFF

Get well, Darren Dutchyshen. I used to watch you every morning at the school for the blind, albeit absolutely unwillingly.

Congratulations to Glen Woodcock on 45 years hosting the big band show on CJRT.

Enjoyed the CBC show "Recovering Filipino" this summer.

Phil Valentine's death really shows his lack of character. Every medical decision carries risk. The COVID vaccine carries risk and not getting it carries risk. That's life. To decide not to take it, then be all "Oh, I wish I had gotten the shot" shows what a whiny jerk you are. If you have a position and make a decision, stick by it.

Happy retirement, Ben Heppner. I caught your show a few times and it was one of the few CBC programs in recent years I actually liked.

On Tuesday, how come the weather alert on CFTO had a human introduction and the one on Global didn't? Also, why were both alerts different?

IN PRAISE OF BLOOD: THE CRIMES OF THE RWANDAN PATRIOTIC FRONT

By Judy Rever. Toronto: Random House Canada, 2018.

As a nine year old, I remember watching the horrors of the Rwandan genocide unfold every morning on "Canada A.M." I, too, believed the Hollywood narrative of the bad guy Hutu against the good guy Tutsi until I read this book.

While Rever never denies the crimes the Hutu did commit against the Tutsi, she sheds light on the terrible doings of the Rwandan Patriotic Front, it's leadership and membership, and it's crimes in Rwanda, Zaire and beyond.

PSALM 109

            Psalm 109

First of all, note that the psalmist had tried turning the other cheek as Jesus would later instruct in the Sermon on the Mount. Note also the psalmist was giving himself unto prayer, not avenging himself. v4-5

Second, note that we don't know how old his children were. They could have been adults.

Third, note the object of this prayer was someone who was not just the personal enemy of the writer of this psalm but who mistreated the poor and needy, including (v17) the recently widowed and orphaned. The man being prayed against also loved cursing others.

Therefore, it would not be unloving to pray such harsh things against such a man out of love for all his victims and potential victims. If his children were indeed adults, it wouldn't be wrong to pray against them if they were taking after their father, and it wouldn't be wrong to pray that the memory of this wicked man's ancestors be blotted out, particularly if their son learned his ways from them but they were remembered and honoured as pillars of the community. It also wouldn't be wrong to pray for this man's financial ruin if all his gains were ill-gotten.

IF YOU WISH TO FOLLOW JESUS YOU MUST BECOME LIKE A CHILD

Matthew 18 1-5

This passage can be confusing in a world of 400 dollar strollers, seven different kinds of Huggies and youth activists traveling around the world telling politicians how to run society, but the main thing Jesus was trying to get at in this passage is that children have nothing to claim.

A child, particularly a young child of course, hasn't accomplished anything or, in the case of an older child, what they have accomplished is so insignificant to the adult world as to be almost laughable.

For instance, if a nine year old walked into the offices of a Fortune 500 corporation and said he wanted to be the next CEO because this summer he had run a successful lemonade stand, he would be shown the door pretty quickly. That's the way the other religions of the world, as well as plenty of Christians, treat salvation. People think they deserve to get into Heaven because of whatever good deeds they've done and whatever bad deeds they haven't done.

To God, this is the equivalent of that nine year old lemonade stand owner wanting to be head of a multi-national corporation. Whatever good we've done is as filthy rags in God's eyes, and it's only by His common grace the sinner can perform any righteous acts in the first place.

Instead, God wants us to enter into a relationship with Him where we recognize our childlike dependency on Him for everything, not just on all the practical things we need to live everyday such as food, air and water, but on our need of Him to teach us how to be the kind of people we should be. This world is like a horribly dysfunctional family and God is a loving father who, through what His Son Jesus did for us on the cross, wants to adopt us and make us into productive members of His kingdom.

The difference is children eventually grow up and become independent from their parents whereas we never get to a point where we don't need the Father.

To learn more about this relationship, read the Bible and to learn about how to enter God's family with Him as your perfect, sinless father, see Acts 2 38.

THE WIDOW'S OFFERING

        Mark 12 41-44

You can't really buy a lot with two cents. If you were down to your last fifty dollars, you could buy a lawn mower or snow shovel and start trying to make money that way. Alternatively, you could buy the ingredients to bake cookies and sell them to earn money.

This widow woman's offering wasn't about giving so much as it was about humble selflessness. Like the Old Testament widow who made a cake for Elijah using the last of her food stuffs that wouldn't have seen her and her son until good times returned anyway, this widow woman didn't attempt to use her inadequate assets to try to save herself or even sustain herself for that little bit longer. Instead, she stepped out in faith and obedience, listening to the Lord's direction rather than her basic instincts.

GOD'S COVENANT

So many religions look back at what Christ did on the cross but a born-again Christian child of God's new creation looks forward to what Jesus is doing from the cross and knows that the cleansing of His blood is our only hope and choice into the truth that leads to salvation of God's eternal, unbreakable covenant in Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the ark that saves all who enter by faith in His truth.
