Genesis 24 45: "and before I had done speaking in mine heart behold Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder and she went down unto the well and drew and I said unto her let me drink I pray thee"
Eleazar was talking to God in his heart. This verse shows it is acceptible to pray silently.

It is actually much preferred, and He truly hates expository prayers, such as those made in public that go on for a long time. An exception to this was the prayer offered by King Solomon at the dedication of the first temple {2 Chronicles 6:12-42}, which was actually given to him to pray by our Heavenly Father for the benefit of His people.
I would definitely agree with you. There are too many long prayers prayed in public after the manner Jesus described in the sermon on the mount.
