THE LAST DITCH

by K. M. Peyton. Oxford, England: Oxford University Press, 1984.

While on holiday in Greece, Jonathan Meredith is seduced by family friend and fellow schoolmate Iris Webster. After he has returned to his and Iris's boarding school, he learns Iris is pregnant. When the school administration finds out, they take away all the priveliges Jonathan enjoys as head prefect. Thus, Jonathan runs away to his friend Peter's, and the two friends end up living in an old farmhouse and training a horse for the Grand National. Along the way, Jonathan still has to contend with the manipulative Iris and Peter's girlfriend, Pip.

This book is thoroughly enjoyable. You feel like you're right there, back in the days of Thatcherism. You find yourself right in the books different settings: from the Greek islands, to the boarding school, to the English countryside.
