KERRIGAN SKELLY WHY THE PENAL SUBSTITUTION THEORY OF THE ATONEMENT IS WRONG

Sometimes I think guys like John Piper and Ray Comfort just like to split hairs. This video smacks of a bit of hair-splitting as well.

If predestination is true, which it is, then Christ did not receive God's wrath on the cross because those who were called from before the foundation of the world were never appointed unto wrath in the first place.

The trinity is not three individual separated persons of God. Rather, it is three parts of God.

What about the verse that says God couldn't look upon sin?

Jesus had to have spent part of the three days he was dead in Hell because the Bible says he took the keys of death and Hell from Satan.

KERRIGAN SKELLY OBJECTIONS TO BIBLICAL PERFECTION ADDRESSED

As I said below, I believe Biblical moral perfection is not literally never sinning but living, in action and attitude, in obedience to Christ with all the knowledge of how to obey Him that you have.

As far as unintentional sin, I would like to phrase this issue more as unknown sin. We are finite beings. We work on a sin and overcome it, and oftentimes after this God reveals another sin in our lives we didn't fully realize we had a problem with. If we are living with an attitude of wanting God to reveal the sins in our lives we don't yet know we have a problem with, then I think we are on the correct path in Christ and are headed toward that moral perfection.

I don't think every true Christian will obtain full moral perfection in this life, but as long as when we die we are still sincerely walking on that path, making that journey, we will spend eternity with our Lord.

God's law was always in place from the beginning of time; it was just codified at Mount Sinai.

As far as Malachi's accountability, I personally think eight is too young to be truly able to come to Christ. To truly begin your own relationship with Christ, you need to understand and have the level of responsibility where you can grasp that Christianity is for life. You can't just practice it for a few days and forget about it, not like that dog you begged your parents to get you for Christmas. You also have to be able to truly grasp the idea of turning your life around, able to truly recognize the difference between the way most people live and the way Jesus commands us to live. I doubt at eight Malachi has these concepts down.

It strikes me the hypercalvinist objection to the perfection the Bible commands goes back to the Catholic church. We know the whore of Babylon is a giant fallen woman with many faces. The Catholic church is the main face, but she also has thousands of Protestant or Evangelical faces. These faces claim to be different, but they are really all reflective of the Catholic face.

In the Catholic church, one never obtains Biblical perfection. You are taught that you will sin every day all your life, and that if you just confess those sins to a priest and say 50 million "Hail Marys", you are good to go. You may even have to spend time in interim Hell, i.e. purgatory, before you are deemed acceptible to enter Heaven. Strip away the more extreme elements of the confession booth and purgatory, and you have the same bare bones doctrine permeating the church world.

KERRIGAN SKELLY WHO ARE THE REAL HERETICS AND PHARESIES

When Jesus told His disciples to obey the Pharesies, He was being sarcastic.

Our salvation is a works-based salvation. I am not speaking about our initial salvation, which is by grace through faith, but after this initial salvation we have to fight the daily fight of faith and endure unto the end in order to make it into Heaven.

To me, living holy does not mean literally never sinning. It means going forth with the attitude that you're going to live in obedience to God's commandments. It also means putting away all the sins in your life that you know of. This is the opposite of going out every day with the attitude that you are going to sin because you're just a miserable worm who can't help it.

Jesus Christ did not die for literally everyone. He died for the people whom God had predestined to come to Him.

I have not personally obtained this moral perfection which Skelly aludes to in this video. However, I know some of the big sins in my life and I have been praying that they would be overcome. I am going on toward the goal of moral perfection in this life. Even if I don't for whatever reason end up overcoming these big sins in my life and/or obtaining said moral perfection, I am confident that if I died right now, I would go to Heaven. I have this confidence because there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ and because I am on the path, living a sincere life of obedience to Jesus Christ, surrendering more of myself and opening up more of my heart to Him all the time.

I don't have a problem with Calvinism as such. I believe in predestination. However, I have a problem with hypercalvinists who use the truth of predestination as an excuse for complacency in the hyuman sphere and as an excuse for not doing what God has told them to do.

REPLY AWL

The April issue of Readers Digest contains a reprint of an article from 1933 in which Helen Keller talks about what she would do if she had the ability to see for three days. To quote Talibam!:

It's fun to think about what might have been,
But that's a bad idea
Cause you'll reach for the gin.

The book choice in the same issue is the story of how a Toronto food bank started offering fresh vegetables and doing other neat things to improve what it's patrons were receiving. It was a good read. I think I'll pick up a copy of the book.

The April 22 issue of Maclean's has an article about the inconvenience to municipalities of students leaving items on the side of the road for passersby to haul away. I don't know why such a thing should be illegal or why governments would have a problem with it. Better to give a TV or piece of furniture a new home than to have it end up in the dump.

Update 5/31: The actual Talibam! lyric I was referring to is:

It's nice to hypothesize
What might have been,
But that's a bad idea
'cause you'll reach for the gin.

KENNETH COPELAND FAITH IN GOD'S WORD MAKES YOU WHOLE

Regarding the story about the guy giving Copeland the cheque at the motel pool, I wouldn't tempt the devil.

We shouldn't go around constantly telling people to go to Hell, but there are times when it is correct to do so. Peter told the man who was trying to buy the gifts of God this when he said "your money perish with you." Paul does this in 1 Corinthians 16 22 when he says "if any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ let him be anathema."

Paul wasn't completely born again on the road to Damascus. Rather, he had to go into the city where he was instructed what he had to do to be saved.

As far as the person who was in need of "serious deliverance", I suspect there might have been a few people in that section suffering from stomach troubles.

Near the end, Copeland gets the audience to repeat a prayer three times. What about the verse where Jesus said, "and when ye pray do not use vain repititions as the heathen do for they think that they will be heard for their many words?"

RADIO-RELATED STUFF

Was listening to a really neat overnight show from Sydney, Australia today while having my lunch. There was music, talk and even an episode of "Hancock's Half Hour."

Been hearing a lot of ham chatter on WTWW 5830 the past few nights.

When was Web Radio last updated? Most of the links to listen to radio stations that I tried today didn't work.

MARK DRISCOLL-ANOTHER FALLACY

In his sermons on alcohol and sexual sin, Mark Driscoll brings up the verse that says that Christ was tempted in every way that we are and then surmises that He may have been tempted to get drunk or have sex.

Here is what that verse actually means.

There are only three areas of temptation mentioned in the Bible: the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life.

We see these areas apparent in Eve's sin in the Garden of Eden. The tree looked good (lust of the eyes), it felt good to touch (lust of the flesh) and it was good to make one wise (pride of life.)

When Jesus was tempted by Satan on the mountain, He was tempted in these three ways as well. Jesus had been fasting for forty days and, like any man He was hungry. Satan told Jesus to turn the stones into bread (lust of the flesh.)

Next, Satan took Jesus to the top of the tower and told Jesus to throw Himself off it because the angels would rescue Him. This is an example of the temptation of the pride of life. People would have believed Jesus was the Messiah then; it would have given His ego a real boost.

Finally, Satan took Jesus to the top of a mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world. Satan told Jesus He could have all these kingdoms if He would worship the devil. This is an example of the temptation of the lust of the eyes. Jesus was seeing the world with all it's natural resources and riches.

Though Jesus was never tempted with sex or alcohol, we can be assured that He was indeed tempted in all the ways we are tempted. Alcohol looks good or tastes good, so maybe we should just keep drinking it. If we get drunk around these guys, we'll be popular with them. Jesus was tempted in all these three ways and he successfully resisted each time.

That person may look hot and/or you know that doing it with them would feel real good. If a girl has sex with a guy that she really likes maybe he will become her boyfriend, or if a guy does it with a girl who is popular then maybe he will become popular, too. Again, Jesus was tempted in all these three basic ways and He successfully resisted all three. Do the same.

KENNETH COPELAND WITH JERRY SAVELLE EVERY DAY IS A BLESSING DAY

The greatest of God's daily benefits is salvation.

Along with healing and renewing of youth, let's not forget other benefits mentioned in Psalm 103 2-6 such as salvation, forgiveness of sins and lovingkindness.

One of the greatest blessings we have from God is being close to Him.

The words "give us this day our daily bread" in the Lord's prayer refer to spiritual bread.

The blessings at this time in Mark 10 29 refer to the family of God that the born again believer is now part of and the way members of God's family help each other.

"... instead of asking God for it, we should wake up every morning believing it has already happened."

What about what Jesus taught us about persistance in prayer?

That anecdote about the piano seems pretty self-centred.

Savelle calls Copeland his spiritual father. Jesus explicitly warns us against doing this.

"... miracles are coming our way every day. We either attract them or they pass us by."

This sounds new age. If we are disobedient to God, we don't get blessings we would have gotten otherwise.

"... it came from inside him out."

Again, this sounds new age, although I can kind of see what he is trying to get at.

DAVID JEREMIAH-THE CHURCH AND THE TRIBULATION

"There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ."

The tribulation period isn't a time of condemnation for the church; it is a time of testing.

"The Holy Spirit is the great force that restrains evil."

I agree with this, but I think in this case Paul is referring to the Roman emperor. The Roman emperor was taken out of the way and that allowed the Catholic church, which is the whore of Revelation, to take over.

Also, to interpret "he who letteth" to be the Holy Spirit implies that man is going to take God out of the way.

David Jeremiah also performs some Biblical slight of hand. 2 Thessalonians doesn't say "the tribulation period", it says "the day of Christ." The believers in Thessalonica thought that Jesus had already come back the second time and they had missed out.

"Revelation 4 4 is a picture of the church in Heaven during the tribulation."

No, it isn't. This passage pictures Heaven as it is now. The church gets clothed with its fine linen in Revelation 19, after the tribulation. Therefore, this passage can't be referring to the raptured church. Of course, this also means the church will go through the tribulation.

"The church of Philadelphia is the true church today."

First of all, the seven churches are not seven different periods of the church down through the ages. Rather, they represent seven different types of Christians.

Second, if the seven churches are representative of different church ages, the self-centred, apostate, weak-kneed church of today is not the church of Philadelphia.

Revelation 3 10 could signify that the Christians in the end times who are Philadelphia church Christians will not have to experience the twenty-one judgments that make up the tribulation period. This could happen in two ways.

First, the Philadelphia Christians could all die before the tribulation period starts. The Lord has taken out a number of His saints recently. Whether this theory is true of the whole or not, no doubt there will be individual saints who will be spared the horrors of the tribulation through going on to be with their Lord beforehand.

The second way Philadelphia Christians could be kept from the hour of the judgments is through temporary escape into other demensions, such as Jesus was when the people of Nazareth wanted to stone Him for saying He was the Messiah.

At any rate, I think it is a stretch to say that "I will keep you from the hour of testing" means Christians will be raptured from the earth before the tribulation period begins.

"The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night means the pre-tribulation rapture."

No, the verse about the Lord coming as a thief in the night refers to Christians who are asleep to what's going on being caught unawares. There will be signs that our Lord is about to return, but many people will not be able to notice them.

The reason the church goes through the tribulation is not because it is appointed unto wrath, but so that Christians can have their faith tested. The thing I find particularly incidious about the pre-tribulation rapture doctrine is the implication that the spoiled, over-indulged, lukewarm, whimpy North American (and really world) church will be allowed to continue to sit in their living rooms gratifying the self and then be taken from the earth before things get really bad.

"... so you have to add back in that the church is going to go through the tribulation."

Who is adding things in, David Jeremiah? The pre-tribulation rapture doctrine was not even taught in the church for 1800 years. If it were a true and vital doctrine, don't you think the early church fathers or the reformers would have realized and taught it?

"Nowhere in the epistles is there any advice given about how to escape the tribulation so that means the church will be raptured and not have to go through it."

Again, Biblical slight of hand. The epistles don't mention anything about escaping the tribulation but Jesus tells his disciples to pray that they are counted worthy to escape the tribulation and for the strength to withstand it.

"Rahab was a Godly woman even though she lied."

Actually, Rahab is an example of the times the Bible condones lying. There are times it is OK to lie; even Jesus lied.

"Christians live with the expectation that Jesus Christ is coming back tonight. ... It is a doctrine called the imminent return of Christ."

The imminent return of Christ is a lie. Paul instructed the Thessalonians and John wrote the Book of Revelation so that believers would be aware of and watch out for the signs that told of Christ's approaching return.

"There are no post-tribulation prophecy conferences."

What the heck does that have to do with anything?

The strong dilusion Paul warns us of is the pre-tribulation rapture.

"There will be people who will be saved in the tribulation ..."

This teaching stems from the fact that teachers like David Jeremiah can't ignore the verses in Revelation about, for example, the giant locusts not harming those who have the seal of God on their forehead. Any person with common sense reading a verse such as this would infer that God's people will be on the earth during the tribulation but will not be harmed by the judgments God has planned for the world. However, such verses get in the way of David Jeremiah's feel-good "don't worry, nothing bad's ever gonna happen to you" doctrine so he then has to introduce the preposterous notion that somehow unbelievers appointed for wrath will be saved during this period of judgment.

Let's think about this. How are people convicted of their sins so that they are prompted to get saved? Answer: By the Holy Spirit. Where is the Holy Spirit? Answer: Within Christians. Therefore, if the Christians are gone from this planet, then the Holy Spirit is gone as well. How then will those of the world going through the tribulation be saved?

"No one who has heard the Gospel now will be saved during the tribulation."

The Bible says that the Gospel of the kingdom of Heaven will be preached throughout the whole world and then the end will come. Are you saying, then, David Jeremiah, that the church will be taken out of the world before it has completely fulfilled it's mission? What kind of ridiculousness is that?!

RADIO-RELATED STUFF

Picked up CJBK last night.

Picked up WIBX last night.

Good to hear Tony Currey still doing his thing on Radio Six International today.

LOOKING BACK-JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2013

Based on notes to myself.

Ordered a couple books from CBM Canada.

My friend had started his own show on Blog Talk Radio.

Speaking of my friend, I went over to his house one day. A friend of his was there. We sat and had coffee and a great prophecy was prophecied over me.

Looking up Birmingham bands I read about in an article.

Joined Elance.

I was listening to different stations while I downloaded books from Wattpad, one of them being CKWS-fm. I was listening to that station on a Monday morning. It gave me a pastoral feeling.

That same day my sister came to the door informing me I had a package waiting at the post office. I went to pick it up. I tried to pay for it with my debit card but the machine wasn't accessible, necessitating me to go down to the bank and get some cash. I returned to the post office and paid for my parcel. It was an external hard drive full of stuff I had ordered from someone.

Later that afternoon the local Seventh-day Adventist pastor took me out for dinner at Sub-way. It was truly a spirit-filled time. All the time I was literally thinking, "Does this really have to end?"

Read one of the books I got from CBM at night. I learned a fair amount from it.

Needed to replace the battery in one of my smoke detectors.

Had some trouble with the external hard drive. It only came with one cord. I finally got ahold of the guy who sold it to me and he said it just needed a genaric square-connector USB cable. I used the one off the printer.

Went to the Ablaze conference one weekend. It was truly a defining moment. There was some question as to whether we would go because we had gotten a blizard that Friday. However, we drove carefully and made it to where the conference was being held just fine.

I was concerned I was going to be too cold there but I ended up being too warm and having to take blankets off.

There were a lot of good sessions and good speakers.

I met some people there and hopefully made some new friends.

The food was really good, too. Any place that serves pancakes and waffles in the same meal is all right with me.

For packing material, the external hard drive was wrapped in old copies of a braille music magazine from England. I enjoyed reading about the modern classical artists featured in those magazines. I perused them while listening to "Canada Reads."

Was also listening to K-rock Kingston a lot in the week before the Ablaze Conference.

RADIO-RELATED STUFF: ONLINE RADIO FROM THE UK AND IRELAND

Picked up WNBF Saturday night.

Been listening to RTE Ireland online the past couple days. I've heard a few really good interviews. As well, the commercials contain darn good copy.

Was listening to BBC Radio 4 online last Friday afternoon. I heard the news, "The News Quiz" and "The Archers." Good to see there are places where this kind of radio still exists.

I will never again listen when Gary Lapierre is a guest on WBZ. He blames social media for why the news business is in such bad shape. On the contrary, look in the mirror, buddy. The mainstream news media is not doing it's job. You are right that they are not asking questions about the Cleveland kidnapping that need to be asked. However, they are also not asking questions or paying attention to evidence or angles concerning the ?Boston bombing, the Sandy Hook shooting, 9/11, and so many other things.

LET HER BREASTS SATISFY YOU ALWAYS

The dedcision by Angelina Jolie to have a double mastectomy as a precautionary measure to prevent breast cancer is not only madness the likes of which I never though I would encounter, it is also unbiblical.

Before I go any further, let me say there may be times when it is necissary for a woman suffering from breast cancer to have a single or double mastectomy. In such cases, let me assure these women that you are still beautiful and sexyl. You are not fundamentally less of a woman because you have undergone this proceedure.

However, Proverbs 5 19 says, "her be the loving hind and pleasant roe _let her breasts satisfy thee at all _times and be thou ravished always with her love" (emphasis added) God designed things so  that a woman's breasts were pleasing to a man. In a proper, Biblical marriage, this would be the case for a lifetime, as shown in the use of the phrase "at all times." Therefore, to have a double mastectomy just so you don't contract breast cancer can definitely be seen as being unbiblical.

However, Jolie's action and the similar actions of other women are unbiblical not only for it's violation of this verse in Proverbs because it also breaks the first commandment.

"THOU SHALT HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME"

Women, who is the only one who knows the future? Answer: God. Despite today's advances in medical technology, only God truly knows if you will get breast cancer or not. By deciding that you are going to have your breasts remove so you won't get breast cancer, you are setting the medical establishment before the God of the universe and letting them tell your future. Sure, there may be a high possibility of you getting breast cancer due to genetic and other factors, but only God knows for sure whether you will contract this disease. Maybe you will never have even so much as a malignant spot on your breast.

Aside from going against God's Word, having a preventative double mastectomy also plays right into the hands of the new world order. One of the goals of the sons of the Evil One (who run Hollywood as well as controlling the medical industry) is to mix up the genders. They want to create a totally androgenous being. One of the ways to accomplish this is to get women to have their breasts removed.

MARK DRISCOLL ALCOHOL

This sermon contains one major fallacy. Driscoll says God can only create good things, when the Bible clearly says God created evil. He did this so that humans would have a choice between drawing near to Him or following sinful desires.

This sermon also gets into a number of side issues. I would disagree with Driscoll with regards to tatoos and piercings. I definitely think they are wrong as stated in Leviticus.

I would also contend the sabbath is not the Jewish sabbath. Rather, it is God's sabbath instituted at Creation. As with the law regarding tatoos and piercings, the sabbath itself was never done away with in the New Testament. When a part of the Law that was merely part of the Old Covenant was done away with, this fact was made very clear.

As an interesting side point, Driscoll prays in his closing prayer, "... You spoke but You never told a lie." Actually, Jesus did lie once, for the right reasons. It concerned His attending the Feast of Dedication.

MARK DRISCOLL SEXUAL SIN

One way to deal with temptation for sexual sin and any other kind of sin is to pray the Lord's prayer every day. This prayer contains the line "lead us not into temptation."

KENNETH COPELAND GOD'S LOVING PLAN FOR YOU

The only major thing I would disagree with in this sermon concerns suffering.

Sometimes, Christians suffer because of disobedience or so that God can teach them something or have them grow in their faith. A great deal, or at least some of this suffering can be avoided if we are diligent to obey God and to study His word, taking the time to learn and grow in Him.

However, many Christians around the world also suffer precisely because they are Christians. This kind of persecution and suffering is glorious because it fulfills what Jesus said, that if the world hated Him it would hate and persecute His followers. This suffering represents fulfilled prophecy and in itself is a testimony that Jesus was who he claimed to be.

It is better to suffer for doing right because at least you did the right thing as opposed to suffering justly because you sinned.

CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGE DRAMA QUEEN

by Dyan Sheldon. Cambridge, MA: Candlewick Press, 1999.

This book is too over the top.

Mary Elizabeth "Lola" Cep is a born actress. Her mother has moved the family from New York to Dellwood, New Jersey, a change Lola is not impressed with. She deals with competition from the "it" girl at school, attending her favourite band's farewell concert and having the lead role in the school's production of "Pygmalion."

At times, this book is just too much. For one thing, in real life the whole high school wouldn't revolve around rich girl Carla Santini. For another, the author makes one of the book's main themes painfully obvious from the beginning, then spells it out near the end. Lola's theatrics also get truly hard to take at times.

REPLY AWL

The March 25 issue of Maclean's contains an article about a new book on a more Biblical way to eat. Though I commend Maclean's for featuring such a book in their publication, I take issue with one thing the article says. In the article, the author of the book, who is a nutritionist, says fasting should be done under the supervision of a nutritionist. From everything I've heard, this is not true. Just eat what you would normally eat the night before. The morning after the fast is over, eat some fruit and something such as melba toast to reintroduce food to your body.

Scott Feschuk's column in the April 1 issue of the same magazine employed a different kind of hyumour than he usually uses.

There is an article in this week's edition of the online Matilda Ziegler Magazine for the Blind by a blind film critic. He reviews the audio description in movies. When I occasionally review movies on this blog, I don't worry about the fact I'm blind. I try to give the kind of brief review I would give to a friend who asked me if the film was worth seeing or not.
